Frequently asked questions
Take a photo of your food. Get one number. Here is everything else.
Do I need to download an app?
No. The Insulin Fix Scanner is a web app, so it runs right in your phone or computer browser, with nothing to install from the App Store or Google Play. For an app-like experience you can add it to your home screen, so it opens full screen with its own icon.
How do I add the Scanner to my home screen?
On an iPhone, open insulinfixscanner.com in Safari, tap the Share icon at the bottom of the screen, then choose Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the menu, and choose Install app or Add to Home Screen. After that it opens full screen from your home screen, just like a downloaded app.
Why is there no install button on my iPhone?
Apple does not let any website show its own install button. On iPhone you add a web app to your home screen through Safari's Share menu instead. It takes two taps: Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Does it work offline?
No. Scoring a photo needs an internet connection, because the analysis runs on our servers, not on your phone. Your saved scans and diary load again whenever you are back online.
What is the Insulin Fix Score?
It is a single number from 0 to 100 that reflects how a food choice tends to affect your insulin, based on Karl Jacob's method from the book Fix Your Insulin. A higher score tends to mean a lower insulin load. It is not calories, not macros, and not a percentage. Just the one number, and one simple upgrade you can make.
What your score means
- 76–100On track
- 51–75Room to improve
- 0–50Spikes insulin
A higher score means a lower insulin load. The goal is consistency, not perfection.
Why did two similar meals get different scores?
Usually the difference is the buffer. The score weighs the whole plate, so the same carbohydrate can land in very different places depending on how much fiber, protein, and fat surround it. White rice on its own scores lower than the same rice topped with salmon and vegetables, because the protein and fat slow digestion and tend to lower the insulin demand.
How is this different from counting calories or glycemic index?
Calorie counting treats every calorie the same and ignores hormones. Glycemic index ranks one food at a time. The Insulin Fix Score judges the whole meal as you eat it, including the protein, fat, and fiber that change how the carbohydrate behaves, and turns that into one number about insulin load, not energy.
A score looks wrong. Can I fix it?
Yes. On any result you can correct the read, which re-checks the same photo with your note and does not use another scan, or you can discard and retake. The score is an educated estimate from a photo, so a quick correction helps it match what is really on your plate.
What can I scan?
Point your camera at a meal for your Insulin Fix Score and the one change worth making, your fridge to see what is helping and what to swap, a grocery cart or shelf to decide before you buy, or a restaurant menu for the best dishes to order. The app recognizes which is which. Fridge, cart, and menu scans are for guidance, so to keep your tracked average meaningful only meal scans count toward it.
What is the diary?
On the Scanner plan and up, every scan is saved to a day-by-day timeline of what you scanned, the score it earned, and any notes you added, so you can see your week at a glance and spot patterns. On the Coach plan you can also log your weight and glucose readings, and a chart plots your average score against your weight over the last 30 days. Everything stays private to your account.
What is the Pattern Coach?
The Pattern Coach is the flagship Coach-plan feature. It reads your own recent data, your scores, your notes, the times you tend to eat, your weight and glucose, and gives you a short, personal coaching note in Karl's voice: what is genuinely working for you, the one habit worth focusing on next, and the research behind why it matters. It needs at least a few scored meals before it has enough to go on, and it is for education and encouragement, not medical advice.
What does each plan include?
Free gives you 20 scans to try, with your score on every one. Scanner adds unlimited scans, all scan types, your history, and your diary. Coach adds everything in Scanner plus the weight diary, glucose tracking, and the Pattern Coach.
How do I cancel?
Anytime, from your Account page. Open Account, manage your billing, and cancel in a couple of taps. You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.
Are my photos and data private?
Yes. Your scans, photos, and any weight or glucose you log are tied to your account and visible only to you. We do not sell your data. A photo is processed to produce your score and then kept in your own private history.
Is this medical advice?
No. The Insulin Fix Score is Karl Jacob's personal framework for evaluating food choices. It is for education and encouragement, not diagnosis or treatment. Always consult your physician before making dietary changes, especially if you have a medical condition or take medication.
